学校自 2018 年春季学期开始实施“外语核心素养发展——HELLO 计划”，目的在于激发学生学习外语的热情，营造学生学习外语的良好氛围，提高我校学生的综合竞争力，培养具有国际视野、人文情怀、专业素养的应用型、复合型、创新型大商科人才。为了更好地推进该计划，展示和进一步提高我校学生英语口语表达能力，现决定举办2019年我院“HELLO计划”大学生英语演讲竞赛（A类）暨第十四届浙江省大学生英语演讲竞赛选拔赛，现将具体事项通知如下：

一.主（承）办机构

主办：我院教务处

承办：外国语学院、学生处

二.参赛对象

1、参赛学生必须是我院全日制在校大一、大二、大三本科学生(不含我院杭州商学院）。

2、杭州商学院学生（含托管）的校级比赛关注杭州商学院学生科技竞赛网。

三.竞赛方式与内容

此次竞赛分初赛、复赛和决赛。

（一）初赛

1.初赛采取网络初选形式进行。登陆我院教务网→竞赛&创新活动网，输入用户名和密码（学生登录用的用户名和初始密码均为学生学号，登陆后可修改密码）→点击登录→选择竞赛入口→在竞赛列表中选择“我院2019年大学生英语演讲竞赛”→竞赛管理→竞赛报名(同时提交初赛作品）。

2.初赛作品要求：参赛选手朗读一篇统一提供的文章（见本通知末尾附件），并模拟现场演讲进行录音，音频长度约为3分钟（WMA格式/MP3格式）。选手将演讲音频文件压缩后（不大于45M）上传到参赛网站。请注意，本次初赛分为英语专业组（包括英语、商务英语专业）和非英语专业组，请参赛同学根据自己专业选择相应的文章进行比赛。

3.选拔方式：本次竞赛评委会根据学生的语音、语调、语流节奏等对作品进行打分，选拔出若干名选手进入复赛。

（二）复赛

1.即兴演讲：赛题保密，选手上场前20分钟抽题，即兴演讲时间为2分钟；

2.回答问题：由提问评委针对选手即兴演讲的内容提出1-2个问题，选手回答时间为 1 分钟；

3.复赛结束后，排名前30位的选手进入决赛。

（三）决赛

1.定题演讲：定题演讲题目待复赛结束之后另行通知。

2.回答问题：由外籍评委针对选手定题演讲内容提1-2个问题，选手回答时间为每个问题1分钟。

3.奖项设置：校赛奖项设置按学校学科竞赛文件规定执行。

4.奖励：获奖同学由学校颁发获奖证书，达到一定成绩的同学可以申请创新学分。

5.决赛排名前12位选手，由外国语学院安排专业教师进行指导和培训，从中选出4位选手代表我校参加11月上旬浙江省大学生英语演讲竞赛，其余选手可参加网络赛。

四.比赛日程安排

初赛报名截止日期：5月3日24:00

复赛入围名单与复赛时间安排：5月10日（见教务处竞赛＆创新活动网、外国语学院网站通知）。

决赛时间：待定（见教务处竞赛＆创新活动网、外国语学院网站另行通知）。

The Delights of Books

John Lubbock

Books are to mankind what memory is to the individual. They contain the history of our race, the discoveries we have made, the accumulated knowledge and experience of ages; they picture for us the marvels and beauties of nature, help us in our difficulties, comfort us in sorrow and in suffering, change hours of weariness into moments of delight, store our minds with ideas, fill them with good and happy thoughts, and lift us out of and above ourselves.

There is an oriental story of two men: one was a king, who every night dreamt he was a beggar; the other was a beggar, who every night dreamt he was a prince and lived in a palace. I am not sure that the king had very much the best of it.  Imagination is sometimes more vivid than reality. But, however this may be, when we read we may not only be kings and live in palaces, but, what is far better, we may transport ourselves to the mountains or the seashore, and visit the most beautiful parts of the earth, without fatigue, inconvenience, or expense.

Books, indeed, endow us with a whole enchanted palace of thoughts. In one way they give us an even more vivid idea than the actual reality, just as reflections are often more beautiful than real nature. “All mirrors are magic mirrors,” says George MacDonald. “The commonest room is a room in a poem when I look in the glass.”

Precious and priceless are the blessings which the books scatter around our daily paths. We walk, in imagination, with the noblest spirits, through the most sublime and enchanting regions.

Without stirring from our firesides we may roam to the most remote regions of the earth, or soar into realms where Spenser’s shapes of unearthly beauty flock to meet us, where Milton’s angels peal in our ears the choral hymns of Paradise.  Science, art, literature, philosophy, — all that man has thought, all that man has done, — the experience that has been bought with the sufferings of a hundred generations, — all are garnered up for us in the world of books.

Problems and Pain

M. Scott Peck

Life is difficult. This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths, because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it. Once we truly know that life is difficult — once we truly understand and accept it — then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.

Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they moan more or less incessantly, noisily or subtly, about the enormity of their problems, their burdens, and their difficulties as if life were generally easy, as if life should be easy. They voice their belief that their difficulties represent a unique kind of affliction that should not be and that has somehow been especially visited upon them, or else upon their families, their tribe, their class, their nation, their race or even their species, and not upon others.

What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, evoke in us frustration or grief or sadness or loneliness or guilt or regret or anger or fear or anxiety or anguish or despair. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life poses an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.

Yet it is in this whole process of meeting and solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the cutting edge that distinguishes between success and failure. Problems call forth our courage and our wisdom; indeed, they create our courage and our wisdom. It is only because of problems that we grow mentally and spiritually. When we desire to encourage the growth of the human spirit, we challenge and encourage the human capacity to solve problems. It is through the pain of confronting and resolving problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Those things that hurt, instruct.” It is for this reason that wise people learn not to dread but actually to welcome problems and actually to welcome the pain of problems.
